Skullcap
- Native
Women’s Tonic![]()
Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), is a perennial herb in the mint family that is native to North America and grows throughout Canada and the Northern US. Traditionally cultivated and used by Native women for menstrual cycles, Skullcap is now used not only during menses, but also for its calming action, relieving stress and supporting the nervous system.* The English name "skullcap" describes the shape of the calyx at the base of the flowers, which resemble miniature medieval helmets. During the 19th century, the common name used in America was "Mad Dog". Skullcap herb is used by Cherokee women to maintain healthy menstrual cycles, and a decoction of the root was taken after the birth of a child to stimulate the reproductive system.* Skullcap is also used in purification ceremonies if menstrual taboos are broken. The Iroquois use an infusion of the root to keep the throat clear.* Other Native American tribes use closely related species as bitter tonics for the kidneys. Due to the historical association of this herb with the reproductive system, it is not advisable to take this herb during pregnancy or if pregnancy is anticipated. * These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
